Politics and Governance

The 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will be held from September 13 to September 27, 2022

The UNGA 77 will convene from 13th September, 2022 with the first General Debate to be held on September 20, 2022. The event will take place in United Nations Headquarters, New York. The Director of Environmental Sustainability at the Office of the President of Hungary, Ambassador Csaba Kőrösi will serve as President of the 77th session of the General Assembly. The UN General Assembly invites representatives from all the member states to hold discussions on the critical current issues prevailing in the international community. The prominent themes under the agenda of 77th UNGA will include sustainable economic growth, maintenance of international peace and security, promotion of human rights, disarmament and combating international terrorism.

Italy will hold its general elections on September 25, 2022

After the Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s resignation due to the rejection of the confidence vote, Italy will elect its new parliament by the end of September. The Italian people will elect the members of both chambers of Italian parliament, whereas the size of chambers will be halved to 400 and 200 in Chamber of Deputies and the Senate respectively. Italian political analysts predict that these upcoming general elections will be the victim of democratic malaise, right-wing populism, and the growth of anti-political sentiments.  So far, the recent polls have exhibited that far-right Brothers of Italy will be likely to win the majority in the upcoming general elections.

Defence and Security

China to Implement New Cross Border Transfer Rules from September 01, 2022

China will implement its new Cross-Border Data Transfer rules with effect from 1st September, 2022. According to these new rules, the Cyberspace Administration of China will have the discretion to conduct indefinite security reviews of the firms handling personal information of over one million Chinese. These measures will be based on China’s three overarching data security laws i.e., Cybersecurity Law (CSL), Data Security Law (DSL) and Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL). The aim of these rules will be to standardize the Chinese data export while also protecting public interests and national security.  Companies not complying with these measures and provisions will be given a period of six months to revise their policies.

Security and Defence Conference, 2022 will be held from September 28 to September 29, 2022

Chatham House will conduct its two-day annual Security and Defence conference on the theme of “Reimagining Transatlantic Security” on September 28th and 29th. The conference will be held in London inviting both in-house, and virtual audience. The Ukrainian crisis has created an unpredictable security environment which will be re-evaluated by the political and military experts in this conference. The speakers in the conference include EU Military Staff’s Director General Hervé Bléjean, Vice President of Europe Jonathan Hoyle and Chief Data Officer of British Army Brigadier Stefen Crossfield. The agenda of conference will be based on understanding the changing nature of conflict and the future of transatlantic security.

Energy and Environment

The 9th International Conference on Energy and Environment Research, ICEER 2022 will be held from September 12 to September 16, 2022

ICEER along with School of Engineering of the Polytechnic of Porto (ISEP), and Science and Engineering Institute (SCIEI) is conducting the 9th International Conference which will aim at bringing engineers, researchers and professionals from different environment and energy fields to explore emerging technologies and discuss current issues related to energy and environment. The conference will be held at Polytechnic of Porto, Portugal. Along with energy and environment the conference will also include a third topic of discussion i.e., Education for Sustainable Development. The ICEER has called for research papers as well from which the accepted and presented papers will be published into the ICEER Conference Proceedings.

Zero Emissions Day will be Observed on September 21, 2022

In order to create awareness about the harms of carbon emissions and break from fossil fuels, September 21, 2022 will be observed as the Zero Emission Day. This practice was established in Nova Scotia, Canada in 2008. The aim of observing this day will be to go carbon neutral and determine daily carbon footprint individually. The day will encourage people to shift towards renewable energy sources and give the planet break not only from fossil fuels but also the microplastics. All over the world, people will create awareness about environment by addressing wide range of environmental issues through; 5Rs i.e., refuse, reduce, reuse, rot, recycle.

Trade and Economics

Bruegel Annual Meetings will be held from September 6 to September 7, 2022

The two-day Bruegel Annual Meetings will be held in Brussels on 6th and 7th September, 2022. The meetings will aim at bringing officials from all important policy making sectors in Europe including public sector, private sector, civil society and academia to discuss the worldwide economic turmoil. The event will be livestreamed. Among the speakers of the meetings, few notable officials include member of EU parliament Damian Boeselager, former Director General of European Commission Jos Delbeke, Deputy Director Generat of WTO Anabel González and Governor of Council of Europe Development Bank Carlo Monticelli. These annual meetings will be a flagship event to discuss the economic themes affecting not only Europe, but the entire world.

Asian Development Bank to conduct the second phase of its 55th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors from September 26 to September 30, 2022

The secretary of ADB, Muhammad Ehsan Khan has announced that the second phase of the Board of Governors’ Meeting will reconvene on a hybrid mode on 26th September, 2022. The meeting will be held in the ADB Headquarters in Manila, Philippines. The agenda of these meetings will include discussions: on policies to tackle Asia’s inequality; ADB’s new energy policy; post-Covid outlook for the development of  Asia; innovative finance’s battle against climate change; and sustainable development. On 28th September’s agenda of the meetings, the 17th informal SAARC Finance Ministers meeting will also be held on the side-lines to be attended by delegations from SAARC member states including Pakistan.

World Suicide Prevention Day will be Observed Worldwide on September 10, 2022

The World Suicide Prevention Day was established by International Association for Suicide Prevention in 2003 and like every year, it will be observed this year too on the theme of “Creating Hope through Action”. This awareness day will aim at highlighting the global, regional, national and local efforts to raise the consciousness of suicide among the individuals. The expectations from observing this day will be to remind everyone that there is an alternative to suicide by inspiring confidence and light in them. From all across the world organizations, institutions and individuals will host events and activities in their own capacity to raise awareness on this day.

UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development – MONDIACULT 2022 will be Conducted from September 28 to September 30, 2022

Marking the last decade of last Decade of action for the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the MONDIACULT 2022 will invite UNESCO’s member states and the non-state actors of international community to jointly reflect on the resilient cultural policies that can tackle global challenges and promote international solidarity, peace and security. The event will occur in Mexico City, Mexico. The event will be based on open and participatory process where cultural and creative sectors will be able to conduct joint conversations. The conference will also compliment UNESCO’s efforts about reinvesting in global policy dialogue to strengthen multilateral cooperation.
