Bangladesh, ICT, 1971, War

The Bangladeshi government has accused various of its religious leaders and public figures of aiding the Pakistan Army in carrying out alleged war crimes against Bengali population before and during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, also referred to as liberation war in Bangladesh. It has accused Pakistan Army of carrying out genocide and mass rapes against ethnic Bengalis in East Pakistan. The Bengali establishment since the creation of Bangladesh has inculcated this discourse among its masses through its school and college curriculum. However, no concrete evidence has ever been provided either to Pakistani government or any international tribunal for that matter. Anyone in Bangladesh who questions this discourse is labeled as pro-Pakistan and a traitor.

The present Bangladesh government, under Sheikh Haseena Wajid, is trying various leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh (JEI-B) and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) who during the 1971 war either volunteered to fight with Pakistan Army by joining the Raakar, Al-Badr or Al-Shams force or publicly condemned the movement for separation from Pakistan. Uptill now, 52 individuals have been indicted or tried as suspects for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Abdul Quader Molla, then assistant secretary general of JeI-B, was hanged in 2013 which was condemned by several international human rights organizations and lead to cold relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The CSCR produces a research brief to study the tribunal established by the Bangladeshi government, its verdicts, opinion of international human rights accusations and factually analyzing the alleged the war crimes.
