European Union (EU) was established in 1993. It is a politico-economic union. UK is an important member of EU and enjoys great influence over EU policy-making mechanism. Various contentious issues exist between the UK and the EU. Greater involvement of EU in the internal affairs of UK, such as its socioeconomic policies have resulted in discontent among many British citizens. Many British observers have even suggested that the UK membership of EU has compromised the sovereignty of its parliament which is considered supreme in Britain. “European Union Referendum Act” was passed in UK’s parliament in December 2015. This coupled with public pressure has forced Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron who is in favor of remaining in EU, to announce a referendum on UK’s EU membership which will be held on 23rd June 2016. CSCR has produced a research brief which covers the upcoming referendum in the UK from different aspects.
